April 2010 - Guild News Bits

Marin Cancer Institute Exhibit

Our guild members have graciously lent their artwork for display in the Marin Cancer Institute’s Atrium Gallery April 12-July 9 (1350 South Eliseo (at Bon Air Road) in Greenbrae). The exhibit will provide guests a much needed burst of beauty and diversion during a trying time in their lives. Check out the quilts on exhibit by clicking on this link.

Community Outreach

Guild members have completed 79 quilts and 139 pillowcases so far. We're really close to our goal for Camp Okizu and Camp Wonder. Please help bring us pass the finish line by bringing in quilts and pillow cases in time for camp (by the May meeting).

Ways & Means

Thanks to everyone for helping make things to sell next fall! Guild members made an amazing number of chicken pincushions in March. Members gathered for a pincusion workshop where we had a lot of fun in the midst of good karma productivity! Keep the pincushions and February's luggage tags coming!

April is Pot Holder month. Sign up at the April meeting for the April 17th workshop (1-3 at Picket Fence Quilt Shop) and/or pick up a potholder kit. There are several different patterns available for making a pair of 7-1/2 inch square potholders.

Coming Events -- May will be PLACE-MAT month! There will be a "quilt as you go" and a "pieced pattern" for you to choose from.

Annual MTQG Quilt Challenge

We'll kickoff this year's Challenge at the April meeting. Purchase one of the 27 packets ($3.00 each) and get get started! Finished quilts will be presented at the December Holiday party where guild members will vote for viewer's choice.

Participants are given the same 2 fabric swatches and are challenged to use at least 4 square inches of both on a quilt front (binding doesn't count). Participants may add as many fabrics as wished - any colors, texture or composition. Quilt width and length must be 18" - 60." Quilts don't have to be square. The Challenge Quilt coordinator may specify a theme or inspirationall words to spice things up. Check out last year's challenge entries: 2009 Challenge Quilts for inspiration.

Marin County Fair

Our guild members have produced such lovely award winning quilts in the past. What fun it is to see your quilt in the show. Please start thinking about entering this year's show. This is a reminder that May is the deadline to register your entry form. (Not the quilt) You can obtain your entry form by calling the fair office at 415-499-6400 or online at marinfair.org

Wildflower Art, Garden & Quilt Show

Quilt show, vendors selling plants and crafts, garden talks. Held on Niles Boulevard in Fremont Sunday May 16 from 10am - 4pm. The festival is free of charge but the Garden Tour is $12 in advance (www.niles.org) or $15 on the day of the show.

Amish Abstraction Quilt Exhibit

This exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. Quilts made by girls and women of various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest are visual distillations of their way of life. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. Using a rich color palette and bold patterns, these quilts are truly a unique contribution to American textile history. The quilts highlight the beauty and complexity of the abstract patterns.

November 2009 through June 2010 at the deYoung Museum.

The Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar

June 24-26 at William Jessup University in Rocklin, California. Featuring special guests, Alex Anderson and Libby Lehman. Go to www.Rickytims.com for additional information.
