2010 Community Outreach
Part of our own mission statement is to make quilts to give to local agencies serving Marin residents. If each of us donates one crib or lap quilt per year, we'll be able to provide a few quilts to all of the targeted groups. Watch for monthly updates from our Community Outreach chairpersons.
Organizations we'll be supporting this year include:
The Okizu Foundation provides peer support, respite, mentoring, and recreational programs to meet the needs of all members of families affected by childhood cancer.
The Children's Skin Disease Foundation focuses on the unique problems of young people who suffer from skin disease and the families who care for them.
Hospice By The Bay's Community Bereavement Program offers the grief support and comfort so needed by all members of the community who are anticipating or coping with the death of a loved one.
Family Service Agency of Marin povides a critical safety net of caring and affordable mental health services to over 7,000 children, adults, and families each year.
Three of these foundations offer summer camps for children in the Bay Area: Camp Okizu, Camp Wonder, and Camp Erin. Camp Okizu needs 10 quilts to enliven their infirmary as children undergo treatments at camp. All camps would welcome pillowcases to personalize the campers' experiences and allow them a means to carry home their camp add-ons. Our goal is 105 pillow cases. Kits are available at guild meetings. All finished quilts and pillowcases need to be turned in by the May meeting.
If you have some kid themed or bright fabrics and would like to donate 3/4 yd. pieces to our guilds pillowcase project then bring it to the February guild meeting. We will use them in our kits we hand out at meetings.
If someone would like the opportunity to practice free motion quilting, we have quite a few quilts with batting and backing ready for your creativity. Just contact the Community Outreach committee.
2009 Community Outreach
Most of the beautiful new baby items our members so generously brought to the Xmas party were taken to the Pregnancy Resource Center of Marin. This agency counsels over a 1,000 pregnant teens/women, offers medical checkups, lab work, etc. and prepares layettes to be given to the new mothers. They were quite excited to get 8 bags of new baby items.
Family Services Agency received over 50 quilts along with some small blankets and more baby items. They were thrilled to receive such a generous gift from our guild as it has been a tough year financially for many families, some of whom are on the verge of homelessness or can't afford to heat their homes. The warm quilts will be lovingly used.
Recently one of the Outreach Chairs gave a presentation of our outreach program to the Las Gallinas Lions Club. This club gives us a grant each year for our outreach program fabrics. During the evening, we heard that there are two small children in Marinwood who are at high risk who are being cared for by neighbors. We were able to give the Lions club 2 childrens quilts to pass on to them. A Lions Club member delivered them the following day.
You have contributed to the warmth and happiness of many families in Marin during this season of sharing. Thank you.
February Speaker - Dale Fleming
Dale Fleming guides us in how to think like a designer, demystifying color, balance, unity, and much more. Her lecture is about translating inspiration into art. She reflects on the many different paths an idea can take before it becomes a quilt. It is about gaining the confidence to call yourself an artist and finding one’s own style. If you were lucky enough to take her work-shop, we learned techniques from her book Pieced Curves So Simple: The 6-Minute Circle and Other Time-Saving Delights... Dale Fleming's fast, easy, and--best of all-pinless technique really works for machine-sewing curves and circles for quilt pieces.
Marin Cancer Institute Exhibit
We will be selecting 20 –25 of our wonderful quilts to exhibit at Marin Cancer Institute’s Atrium Gallery at 1350 South Eliseo in Greenbrae April 12-July 9th. Traditional, innovative and art quilts—calm and peaceful as well as joyful and bright— are requested.
We’re looking for quilts which you’re the most proud of and which you and others view as de-lightful/exciting/wonderful. The size is a minimum of approximately 24 x 24, and maximum of approximately 47(w) x 52(l). Quilts need to be clean, even sides, no loose threads, and technically well done. They must have a label and at least a 3" sleeve.
Lost in Translation Challenge
The "Lost in Translation" challenge will begin at the March meeting. Think of the "Telephone" game you played as a child. This challenge works a bit like that.
The first person in each group will receive a photo which will be the inspiration for them to create an 18" x 24" quilt. They will then pass their quilt on to the next person in their group. That person will not see the original photo, but will use the first quilt as their inspiration. When they have completed their quilt, they return the inspiration quilt to the maker and pass their quilt on to the next person in the group until every-one in the group has completed a quilt. When all the quilts are done, they will be presented as a whole at a guild meeting. At that time and only at that time, we will all see the original photo and the progression of quilts. The unveiling will yield quite a surprise and I wonder if the original photo will be - Lost in Translation. This is going to be lots of fun!
Sign up at the February meeting if you are interested.
